FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1)    What is Taekwondo?  Taekwondo is a martial art that originated in Korea. It literally means, “The art of kicking and punching.” While the practice has been around for thousands of years, the name itself was created in 1955 by Gen. Choi Hong Hi. It has deep roots and is a blend of similar Korean arts such as Subak and Taekkyon. Taekwondo is the fastest growing martial art in the world, even though the name “Karate” is more universally known.

2)    What is the difference between Taekwondo and Karate? Both of these styles are very similar and hard to distinguish to anyone who isn’t involved in martial arts. The biggest differences of the 2 styles are where they originated from and what their emphasis’ are. Taekwondo developed in Korea and Karate came from Japan. You have Kung-Fu which originated in China and probably has the deepest roots of any martial art. Taekwondo, and other Korean arts focus primarily on kicking, whereas Karate and other Japanese styles have a stronger emphasis on the upper body. However, both are almost identical.

3)    Which style (Karate or Taekwondo) better for me or my child? You cannot judge which style is better. It will always depend on the school and instructor. Both styles will teach discipline, focus, respect, self-defense and fitness. You as a student or parent will be able to notice which school can meet your needs for yourself or your child.

4)    Will Taekwondo make my child more violent? Many tests have proven that children who are actively training in martial arts are less likely to have to defend themselves. They learn from day 1 that martial arts are not used to learn how to fight. The child will become more confident, have increased self-esteem and have a place to work out their anxiety. Martial Arts are good for kids who are already aggressive (towards siblings or school) since it teaches children how to deal with their challenges. If your child is aggressive then it usually reflects the child’s self-esteem and how they view themselves.

5)    How much does it cost? SMAC is always running monthly and weekly specials so please call us for details. We have many programs to choose from, our main concern is to find which one works for you.
